World capitals are one of the most repeated topics in the General Knowledge part of almost every competitive exam in Pakistan. Whether you are preparing for a PPSC one-paper test, an FPSC screening test, the CSS MPT, or tests by NTS, OTS and CTS, a small set of capital questions comes back again and again. This post collects 103 of the most repeated world capital MCQs in one place — checked, corrected and arranged region by region so you can revise them quickly.
Read the list actively: cover the answer, say it in your mind, then check. Two full passes through this page are worth more than ten passive readings.

Tricky Capitals and Special Facts Examiners Love
Some capitals are asked again and again precisely because candidates confuse them. Learn these separately.
- Highest capital in the world: La Paz, Bolivia (about 3,640 metres above sea level). It is the seat of government; Sucre is the constitutional capital.
- South Africa has three capitals: Pretoria (administrative), Cape Town (legislative) and Bloemfontein (judicial). If a single answer is forced, choose Pretoria.
- Sri Lanka has two capitals: Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte (legislative) and Colombo (executive and judicial).
- Netherlands: Amsterdam is the constitutional capital, but the government and parliament sit in The Hague.
- Switzerland has no official capital; Bern works as the de facto capital.
- Ottoman Empire: its capital was Constantinople, today Istanbul.
- Byzantine Empire: its capital was also Constantinople — the same city asked from two different angles.
- Islamabad was officially made the capital of Pakistan in 1967.
- Indonesia is shifting its capital from Jakarta to Nusantara, but current exam papers still treat Jakarta as the answer.
How to Memorise Capitals So They Stay
- Learn by region, not alphabetically. Your brain stores maps better than lists — finish Asia first, then move on.
- Use the map method. Keep a world map open while revising; point at each country before reading its capital.
- Revise on a cycle. Read the full list today, again after two days, then after a week. This spacing is what moves facts into long-term memory.
- Practise from past papers. Capitals repeat with the same wrong options (for example, Sydney offered instead of Canberra). Recognising the trap is half the marks.
- Attempt carefully. PPSC one-paper tests deduct 0.25 marks for a wrong answer, so a blind guess on a capital you do not know is usually a loss, not a gain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do world capital MCQs come in the CSS exam?
Yes. The CSS screening test (MPT) and the General Knowledge portion of competitive exams regularly include world geography, and capitals are its simplest scoring part. The same list also serves PMS, FPSC and one-paper tests.
How much of the PPSC one-paper test is General Knowledge?
The one-paper test of 100 MCQs mixes Pakistan Studies, Current Affairs, Islamic Studies, Geography, Basic Mathematics, English, Urdu, Everyday Science and Computer basics. World capitals sit inside the Geography and General Knowledge portion — a small part, but one of the easiest to score fully in.
Are these questions taken from past papers?
They are compiled from the questions that repeat most often across PPSC, FPSC and other testing services' past papers and model papers. Wording in the actual paper may differ slightly, but the facts tested are the same.
What is the fastest way to prepare capitals in one day?
Read this list region by region with the answers covered, mark the ones you miss, and revise only the missed ones twice more before sleeping. Most candidates can secure this topic in a single focused evening.
