Job Interview Preparation: What Panels Ask, What to Wear & How to Answer

In commission recruitments the interview can change the final merit order. This guide covers how government interview panels work, the questions they repeat, dress expectations, and the documents you must carry.

In FPSC and provincial commission recruitments, the candidates called for interview are usually a few times the number of posts — so the interview is not a formality. The panel cannot change your written marks, but its marks can move you up or down the final merit list. Here is how to prepare for it properly.

What the panel is testing

A government interview panel — typically senior officers and a subject specialist — tests three things: your subject knowledge at the level of the post, your general awareness (Pakistan, current affairs, the department you are joining), and your suitability: confidence, honesty, communication and temperament for public service. Questions are usually drawn from your application form — your subjects, your district, your experience — which is why everything you wrote in the form must be true and revisable.

The questions that repeat

Revise your final-year subject notes, read the department's website, and follow the month's major national news. For current affairs, accuracy matters more than volume.

Dress and conduct

Wear clean, formal, sober dress: for men, a suit or shalwar kameez with waistcoat, or formal shirt and trousers with polished shoes; for women, a neat, formal outfit as per personal and cultural preference. Arrive at least 30 minutes early. Greet the panel, sit when invited, answer in the language the panel uses (Urdu, English, or a mix — panels switch freely), and keep answers direct. If you do not know an answer, say so respectfully and move on; inventing an answer is the fastest way to lose a panel.

Documents — non-negotiable

Carry all original documents — CNIC, domicile, every certificate and degree with transcripts, experience certificates, quota certificates — plus one attested set. Interview letters list exactly what to bring; a candidate who reaches the panel without originals is usually not interviewed at all, whatever the reason.

After the interview

Final merit lists and recommendations are published by the commission. If you are recommended, the department issues the appointment process — medical examination, police verification and joining formalities. Keep your phone number active: most departments communicate joining instructions by post and phone, and a missed medical date can cost the appointment.
