Age Limit & Age Relaxation Rules for Government Jobs in Pakistan
Advertisements show age limits like \"21 to 30 + 5 years\" — but what does the plus actually mean, who gets relaxation, and how is your age calculated? This guide explains the general rules used by federal and provincial recruiters.

Age is where many applications quietly fail: the candidate was eligible but calculated wrongly, or ineligible and applied anyway. Advertisements express age limits in a compressed code — for example "21 to 30+05=35 years" — and this guide decodes it.
Reading an age limit
"21 to 30+05=35" means: the basic age limit for the post is 21 to 30 years, and a general relaxation of 5 years in the upper limit is already included in the advertised maximum of 35. You do not add 5 again. Provincial advertisements sometimes show a larger built-in relaxation (PPSC advertisements, for example, commonly show +5 years for male candidates and +8 years for female candidates in the upper limit, which is why the same post reads 30+05=35 for males and 30+08=38 for females).
How your age is calculated
Your age is calculated on the closing date of applications (or the date the advertisement names), from the date of birth on your Matric certificate / CNIC. Even one day over the maximum makes you ineligible, and there is no discretion to forgive it. Always calculate your exact age on the closing date before paying any fee.
Who gets additional relaxation
Beyond the general relaxation already built into most advertisements, additional relaxation in the upper age limit is given under the rules to specific categories — the exact rules differ between the federal government and each province, and the advertisement states which apply. Common categories include:
- Government servants with the required length of continuous service
- Retired personnel of the armed forces, for a period linked to their service
- Candidates belonging to scheduled castes / recognised minorities, in some provincial rules
- Disabled persons, in some provincial rules, against the disability certificate
- Widow / son / daughter of a government servant who died during service, under specific rules
Two cautions: relaxation categories usually cannot be stacked indefinitely — most rule-sets cap the total — and a relaxation you claim must be supported by its certificate at scrutiny. If the advertisement does not mention your category, do not assume it applies; check the recruitment rules or ask the commission before applying.
Posts with no relaxation
Some recruitments — notably uniformed services and posts with physical standards — apply their age limits strictly, and commissions do not entertain age cases after the closing date in any recruitment. If you are near the boundary, apply in the current cycle: waiting for the next advertisement is the most common way candidates age themselves out of a job.
